Miyagikyo is Nikka's second distillery, established in 1969 in a wooded valley west of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. Conceived by Masataka Taketsuru as a counterpart to Yoichi, it was built to produce a softer, more elegant and more finely textured style of whisky, shaped by its cool, humid environment and a production approach designed to favor purity, fragrance and balance.
This character remains at the heart of the distillery's identity. Miyagikyo single malt is recognized for a fruit-forward, floral style with gentle spice, malt sweetness and polished oak, delivering a more delicate and supple profile than many heavier Japanese malts. Beyond its role as a single malt in its own right, Miyagikyo spirit also plays a key part in Nikka's broader blended whiskies, where it contributes finesse and aromatic lift.
The distillery's own range is centered on the core Single Malt Miyagikyo expression, with additional limited and special releases appearing from time to time. Together, they showcase a distillery whose appeal lies not in power or smoke, but in precision, texture and a quietly distinctive elegance.
