Nikka Taketsuru is a Japanese pure malt whisky named after Masataka Taketsuru, the Scottish-trained founder of Nikka and one of the central figures in the development of Japanese whisky. It combines malt whiskies from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, marrying Yoichi's bolder, lightly smoky coastal character with the softer fruit and elegance that Miyagikyo is known for.
The current Taketsuru Pure Malt is a no-age-statement expression, following the discontinuation of the previous aged releases as Japanese whisky demand put pressure on mature stocks. Rather than positioning itself as a single malt, it is a blended malt focused on balance, texture and harmony, reflecting Nikka's longstanding commitment to blending as a craft in its own right.
In character, Taketsuru is refined and gently complex, with orchard fruit, malt sweetness, vanilla, spice and a delicate thread of smoke. It is an approachable yet serious whisky: smooth enough for those new to Japanese whisky, yet nuanced enough to showcase the quiet precision and restraint that represent Nikka at its finest.
